The Kano State Government has approved a N2.5 billion project to develop irrigation infrastructure at the Kafin Chiri dam in Garko local government area. The project, aimed at boosting agricultural production and creating jobs for youths, will develop 419 hectares of land for dry season and rain-fed agriculture.
According to Malam Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, State Project Coordinator of the Islamic Development Bank and Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF) funded project, the initiative will enable farmers to engage in year-round agricultural activities, increasing their productivity and income.
“The project will feature a gravity-fed irrigation system, conveying water from the dam to farms through a network of canals, eliminating the need for fuel-powered pumps and significantly reducing costs for farmers.” He said
The KSADP Project Engineer, Zahraddeen Hamisu Zarewa, highlighted the project’s benefits, including increased farm value and productivity, while the chairman of the Garko local government area, Alhaji Gambo Isa Garko, pledged support from local authorities, community, and religious leaders.
