The Kano State Government has revealed that it requires approximately N60 billion to provide furniture for the 4.5 million primary and secondary school students currently learning on bare floors. Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Umar Doguwa, disclosed this information during a press briefing in Kano on Thursday.
Doguwa attributed the decline in the state’s education sector to the previous administration of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, which he claimed dismantled a functional system inherited from Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
He also cited the closure of schools by the previous administration as a contributing factor to the deterioration of education infrastructure.
The commissioner noted that the state has 10,000 schools with 7 million students, of whom 4.5 million are learning without basic furniture. He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for declaring a State of Emergency on education and increasing the sector’s budget by 30 percent.
Doguwa expressed the government’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector and making Kano “a hub of learning.” He announced plans to implement the education policy, starting with the New Girls Science and Technical College, formerly known as Governor’s College, Kano, through the provision of instructional materials and renovation of dilapidated infrastructures
