The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, emphasized the vital role of the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) in fostering community participation in basic education during the inauguration of the National SBMC Body in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Bobboyi noted that the formation of a National SBMC Executive would enhance coordination between schools, states, zones, and the national level. He added that the initiative would help leverage resources, expertise, and support to improve educational outcomes across Nigeria.
“The creation of this national body marks a major step forward in improving basic education in the country. We are committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure that every child has access to quality education,” said Dr. Bobboyi.
Dr. Ossom Osson, the Director of Mobilization at UBEC, also delivered a welcome address, highlighting the significance of the inauguration in the development of basic education. He noted that the National SBMC Body would play a crucial role in coordinating SBMC activities at the national level for greater effectiveness.
Dr. Osson also reported that between 2017 and 2023, the commission, through the SBMC School Improvement Project (SIP), disbursed over four billion naira to communities across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the execution of SBMC SIP projects.
In his acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated National SBMC Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar, the Waziri of Gwandu, pledged to work closely with relevant stakeholders to promote community participation in school decision-making.
He commended UBEC for the initiative, adding that it is a positive step towards making education accessible to all children of school age.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives from various partner organizations, civil society groups, and stakeholders in the education sector.
In addition, the two-day meeting gathered State SBMC Chairmen, Secretaries, and Directors of Social Mobilization from all 36 states and the FCT, who nominated the newly elected national and zonal SBMC officials.
With the establishment of the National SBMC Body, Nigeria is set to make significant strides in advancing basic education, with UBEC and other stakeholders committed to ensuring every child receives a quality education.
