UBEC, SUBEB Strengthen School Governance Through Capacity Building for SBMCs

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in collaboration with the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has commenced a two-day capacity-building workshop for School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) members and Local Government Education Secretaries aimed at strengthening school governance and improving the quality of basic education in Kano State.

The workshop, taking place in Dutse, Jigawa State, brought together key education stakeholders, including the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda; the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Malam Yusuf Kabir; officials of UBEC, chairmen of SBMCs, and Local Government Education Secretaries.

Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, emphasized that SBMCs remain indispensable partners in the drive to improve basic education. He noted that the committees play a vital role in increasing school enrolment by returning out-of-school children to classrooms, enhancing school security, supporting infrastructure maintenance, and mobilizing communities to actively participate in the management and development of schools.
According to the Commissioner, the establishment of SBMCs reflects government’s commitment to fostering stronger collaboration between schools and their host communities in the implementation of basic education policies.
In his address, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Malam Yusuf Kabir, commended UBEC for its continuous support and commitment to improving basic education through impactful programmes and interventions.
He stated that the initiatives of UBEC align with the education transformation agenda of the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose administration has continued to prioritize access to quality education.

Malam Yusuf Kabir further disclosed that SUBEB has provided office accommodation for the SBMC Executive Committee at the Board’s headquarters and approved a monthly operational allowance to strengthen the committee’s activities. He reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with SBMCs to enhance educational service delivery across the state.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of the UBEC Kano State Office, Malam Abdurrahman Musa, said the training was designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

He applauded the Kano State Government, the Ministry of Education, and SUBEB for their unwavering support for programmes that promote quality basic education.
On behalf of the participants, the Kano State Chairman of SBMC, Alhaji Tijjani Haladu Baraya, described the workshop as timely, particularly as the Kano State Government is implementing major reforms in the education sector.

He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for introducing policies and programmes that are driving improvements in education across the state.

The first batch will conclude its sessions before the commencement of the second batch to ensure effective participation and maximum impact.
